Switchable glass refers to a type of laminated glass with an electronically controlled interlayer which allows the interlayer to change from a translucent state to an opaque state. This provides the occupant with flexibility in altering the degree of privacy as situation dictates.
When an electric current is applied, the liquid crystals align in one direction allowing incident light to pass through. In this state, the glass is translucent.
When the electric current is switched off, the liquid crystals are randomly oriented, thus scattering incident light. In this state, the glass is opaque.
